Historical Significance
First Owner: Revolutionary War hero Alexander Bellissime, a French soldier who fought alongside Lafayette during the American Revolutionary War, were the USA successfully gained independence from British rule and, according to family legend, saved Lafayette’s life three times.
Chain of Ownership: Bellissime sold the property to prominent Florissant settler Louis Ouvre, who arrived in Florissant in 1791 and served as a trustee of St. Ferdinand Church. From Ouvre, the property transferred to the families of Belleville, Tison, Steudeman, Desilet, Castello, James, Bullard, Baillet, Heur, Tegethoff, and others. Each of these families contributed significantly to Florissant’s development through business ownership, public service, and active involvement in the Church.
Architectural Details
- Brick masonry design, believed to be the oldest Missouri French home of masonry construction in the region.

The Bellissime-Ouvre House has undergone an extensive restoration to preserve its historical character while introducing modern amenities. Key updates include:
Structural Improvements:
- Rebuilt the inside basement foundation with new concrete.
- Added new stairs for the basement and custom cellar doors to access the basement from the exterior.
- Performed tuck pointing on the exterior to restore brickwork to its original condition.
- HVAC System: Installed a brand-new AC unit, furnace, hot water heater, and added AC ductwork on the first floor.
